Hitachi projects lower Q2 2002 LCD unit profit

Hitachi (Tokyo, Japan) flat screen maker, forecasts that profit at its LCD unit will fall in 2nd-qtr 2002 vs the previous qtr as a result of an oversupply of flat-screens caused by slower sales of PCs. LCDs shipped during August 2002 sold for less than LCDs shipped during July 2002, according to Fumiaki Yonia, president and managing officer of Hitachi's LCD unit, however he declined to give exact earnings figures. Hitachi's display operation is expected to generate Y8 bil full-year operating profit in fiscal 2003, of which 75% is expected to come from flat screens. Global PC sales dropped by
