IBM, Semtech introduce low-power M2M technology

IBM Research has teamed up with Semtech, an analogue and mixed-signal semiconductor supplier, to create a new technology based on low-power, wide-area networks (LPWANs) that IBM described as ideal for machine to machine (M2M) communications. The technology, dubbed LoRaWAN (Long Range wide-area networks), overcomes hurdles such as limited battery life, short communication distances, high costs and a lack of standards, said IBM.
