ICO fines EE GBP 100,000 for unlawful direct marketing messages

UK mobile operator EE has been fined GBP 100,000 by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for sending more than 2.5 million direct marketing messages to customers without their consent.

I think EE can consider themselves harshly dealt with by the ICO here. The ICO acknowledged that EE hadn’t set out to deliberately break the rules. It was a pretty minor infringement and there were no complaints By contract Tax Return Ltd were fined just a third as much per text as EE, for a far worse offence. They spammed 14 million people with a campaign that generated over 2000 complaints.
