The Organisation of American States (OAS) and the Internet Society have signed a cooperation agreement to promote the creation of new community networks that provide internet access to rural and remote areas of the Americas. The deal with OAS will be carried out through its Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) and is signed in response to the commitments of the ICT Alliance 2030 for the Americas. The partners said the deal commits to developing at least 15 Internet Community Networks in rural and remote areas of the Americas by 2020.

Other commitments include the provision of technical training to 150 inhabitants of rural and remote areas, making sure that at least 3 countries in the region adopt policies that allow the creation of enabling environments to provide access to the internet through community networks and the creation of a regional event to raise awareness about the importance of implementing community networks.
