Italian election results inconclusive as populists surge

Italy appears poised for a hung parliament after no single party or coalition clinched an absolute majority in the general election of 04 March. Projections on a partial vote count pointed to a right-wing alliance including former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia emerging with the biggest bloc of votes, ahead of the anti-system 5-Star (Cinque Stelle) Movement, which saw its support surge to become Italy's largest single party.
