The Postal and Communications Police of Rome has placed under preventive seizure and blacked out 27 web addresses, as part of a new operation against the illegal downloading and streaming of movies and music on the internet. The monitoring carried out by the investigators ascertained the existence of an alternative platform to the services offered by pay-TV broadcasters and the film industry, including many first-run movies in cinemas. According to Italian copyright organisation Siae, this was one of the most significant global seizures and the first of this scale in Europe, considering that the total estimated loss to the industry amounts to approximately EUR 1.5 billion, of which EUR 800 million in film sector and EUR 700 million in the music sector.
