Italian 'smartphone tax' increase becomes official

The triennial update of the "equo compenso" (fair compensation) decree, which significantly increases the amounts levied on smartphones, tablets and other hi-tech consumer devices in Italy, was finally published in the official gazette on 07 July. Dario Franceschini, Italy's culture minister, previously announced the increase on Twitter, confirming that the money raised would be distributed to copyright owners as compensation for personal copies of digital files. The revised decree will see EUR 4 levied on smartphones and tablets with a memory of up to 16 GB (up from the EUR 0.90 and EUR 1.90
