Italian state to go it alone in broadband expansion

The Italian state will forge ahead with its plans to roll out high-speed broadband in so-called digital divide areas that have been unable to attract private investment, according to a government official cited by Reuters. Although the government last year freed up an initial EUR 2.2 billion of public funds to begin work on an ambitious broadband expansion plan, it has been unable to persuade private operators to invest similar amounts and will now go it alone via state-owned infrastructure firm Infratel.
