Italian telecom operators team up against Telecom Italia

Friday 6 July 2007 | 09:51 CET | News
The competitors of Telecom Italia have teamed up and are calling for a separation of the incumbent's network, both the legacy copper system and the new IP network. Vodafone Italia, Fastweb, Wind, Tiscali, British Telecom, Tele2, Welcome Italia and Eutelia have sent a joint document to the Communications Authority (AgCom) in which they underline the need for network separation to correct market asymmetries and increase competition. Among other things they propose the setting up of an independent body with an active role for AgCom to develop a management process for the network and ensure equal access. The alternative operators point out that Telecom Italia has a 95 percent share of the access market, 70 percent of the broadband market and 67 percent of national telephony services in the retail sector.
