Italian watchdog green lights "modest" Enel broadband plan

Italian utility giant Enel has received regulatory clearance for its plan to enter the broadband market after the energy watchdog AEEG approved the installation of around 30 million smart meters over the next four years. The operator has created a new venture called Enel Open Fiber to facilitate the deployment of a superfast broadband network in association with the country's operators. However, in response to the regulator's request for information, Enel said the potential synergies arising from the installation of the new meters and the possible rolling out of fibre-optic cables would be
