Italy to bring fibre to 172 Calabria localities by end-2016

The southern Italian region of Calabria will be one of the European Union's most highly-connected areas by the end of the year, when a further 172 localities receive fibre-optic broadband technology. The region announced an agreement with Italy's Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) and state-owned infrastructure firm Infratel to roll out fibre-optic broadband in a further 172 localities – 64 in the province of Cosenza, 45 between Catanzaro and Crotone, and 63 between Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia – that have been unable to attract private investment.
