ITU confirms G.fast standards

Friday 2 May 2014 | 11:39 CET | News
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has confirmed the final G.fast standards. ITU-T 9700 and ITU-T 9701 received preliminary approval in December 2013 and the definitions were confirmed on 04 April. G.Fast is the latest evolution of DSL, and the technology is expected to be ready for commercial deployment in 2016 at the earliest. G.Fast uses TDD (Time Division Duplex) technology across a much wider frequency range than ADSL or VDSL, namely up to 106 MHz or 2012 MHz. Over short distances, up to 100m, aggregated bandwidth (downlink plus uplink) of 1 Gbps or higher is achievable.
