Kenya to subsidize the poor in digital migration process

The Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) said the government may subsidise the cost of set-boxes for the poor in order to meet the digital TV migration deadline of June 2015. Director General Francis Wangusi said that the government is considering a number of options, including tapping into the universal service fund to ensure that digital set-top boxes are affordable to all consumers. The high price is caused by the low volume of imports of the decoders. Wangusi said that the optimum retail price would not exceed USD 50.
