Kenyan government earns KES 26.3 bln in mobile airtime tax in 2018

The Kenyan government collected KESD 26.3 billion in excise taxes from airtime in 2018, The Standard reported citing official data from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). The figure was up by 63 percent from KES 16.1 billion collected in the previous year. The rise came after the National Treasury imposed 15 percent excise duty on mobile money transfer services, airtime and data, up from 10 percent.
