Then Kenyan government has set up a taskforce on blockchain that aims to develop the technology in order to boost economic growth. ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru said the taskforce will have 90 days to develop a fifteen-year plan to enable Kenya to tap into the emerging opportunities in the technology sector. The taskforce will include key sector experts and technology enthusiasts, Mucheru said.

He said that the specific objectives of the taskforce will be to critically review distributed ledgers and artificial intelligence (AI) for potential applications in Kenya's big four priorities of food security, universal healthcare, manufacturing and affordable housing. He said that the government is keen to use ICT to promote and enhance delivery of government services including health, education and security.

Mucheru said that the government has embarked on a number of ambitious projects that include a single source of truth, with the aim of providing every Kenyan with a single, unique identity from birth.
