Kenyan regulator launches free text service to identify fake mobile phones

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has introduced a two-way mobile phone verification service to identify whether a handset is genuine or counterfeit. Acting CA Director General Mercy Wanjau said verification will be free of charge and is meant to boost the fight against counterfeit devices in the country. Wanjau said that the CA has set up a mobile messaging service to aid users in ascertaining whether the handsets they own or are about to purchase are genuine.
