Lacuna Space, Plant-e use plant-powered IoT sensor to send signal to space

A pilot service, developed by Netherlands-based Plant-e and Lacuna Space, has seen a plant-powered IoT sensor successfully transmit to a satellite in space.

The service combines Plant-e's energy harvesting technology with Lacuna's power-efficient devices. The IoT prototype device developed by the two firms uses the electricity generated by living things to transmit LoRa messages about soil moisture, air humidity and temperature to Lacuna's satellite. The pilot service is supported by the European Space Agency's (ESA) ARTES programme. 

Based in the UK and the Netherlands, Lacuna Space aims to launch an LEO satellite system to provide a worldwide IoT service, collecting data from sensors even in remote areas with no or little connectivity. Lacuna is currently operating a pilot service with one satellite in orbit, with plans to launch three more satellite over the next few months.
