Last weel in media: OTT service Joyn and StarzPlay expand, broadcasters in consolidation mode

Monday 2 December 2019 | 07:01 CET | News

Walt Disney had another box office hit in its hands, while the OTT services segment kept expanding. In broadcast, consolidation was the common theme. The Telecompaper Global Media index ended week 48 up 0.7 percent, just behind the S&P 500 index (+1.0%).

Joyn and StarzPlay expand

Walt Disney (+2.2% for the week) had another box office hit, this time with a sequel: Frozen 2. In the OTT segment, ProSieben's (+3.7%) and Discovery's (+1.3%) German Joyn service added an SVOD tier, after having launched recently with an AVOD offering only. Starz, a unit of Lions Gate (+0.5%), expanded its StarzPlay service internationally. Tamedia (-0.2%), the Swiss publisher and owner of the Zattoo service, decided to change its name to TX Group from 1 January 2020.

Mediaset/Vivendi battle undecided

In the broadcast segment, Mediaset (+0.7%) and Vivendi (-0.1%) failed to reach an agreement on Vivendi pulling out of Mediaset. According to press reports, Mediaset wouldn't go above EUR 2.98 per share, whereas Vivendi demanded a minimum of EUR 3.10 per share for its stake in Mediaset, which closed the week at EUR 2.74. It is now up to the courts to decide if, how and when Mediaset proceeds with its Media For Europe plan.

Atresmedia (+0.7%) formulated a new commercial strategy, taking down the wall between television and digital. RTL (+2.3%) reported a small number of job cuts and ProSieben proceeded with the sale process for its Red Arrow unit. All3Media, owned by Discovery and Liberty Global, is poised to buy the prodco.

The merger of Viacom (+1.8%) and CBS (+2.2%) into ViacomCBS was set to close on 4 December, after hours.
