MainOne, Subcom declare Dakar and Grand Bassam branches ready for service

Tuesday 3 December 2019 | 10:07 CET | News

SubCom and MainOne have announced that two new branches of the MainOne Cable System are ready for service. The branches extend from the MainOne omnibus cable between Seixal in Portugal and Accra in Ghana to landing stations in Dakar in Senegal and Grand Bassam in Cote d'Ivoire.

MainOne's 7,000 km cable system runs from Portugal to Nigeria. The two new branches utilise SubCom's SL17-A1 cable . They benefit from SubCom’s undersea WSS reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology and a spectrum sharing system on the omnibus fibre pairs to achieve wavelength distribution.

The use of the WSS ROADM technology a first for Africa and the first to be put into service in a system anywhere worldwide. The WSS ROADM and the terrestrial ROADM functionality in Ghana provide MainOne with direct transmission between the new landings and all of the previous landings, including Lagos.

The system has a protected, diverse terrestrial route with automatic protection switching between the cable landing station (CLS) and the PoP in Cote d'Ivoire.
