Malaysian operators allowed to build 3G networks
The telecom regulator of Malaysia has approved the 3G business proposals of both Telekom Malaysia and Maxis Communications to begin building third-generation (3G) mobile networks. Malaysia, one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing mobile markets with 8.6 million subscribers, plans to introduce 3G services in 2004, according to a Reuters media report. Telekom and Maxis won their 3G licences last July but the government reserved the right to withdraw them if the firms did not submit roll-out plans that matched pre-set standards.
