Mexican govt slashes 'Mexico Conectado' budget

Monday 12 September 2016 | 15:09 CET | News
The Mexican government has slashed the amount allocated to the Mexico Conectado national connectivity programme under its latest 2017 budget proposal, reports business daily El Financiero. The budget submitted by Mexico's finance minister Jose Antonio Meade to legislators called for total cuts of MXN 239.7 billion, with Mexico Conectado's budget cut by 84.1 percent compared to the MXN 776.7 billion allocated in 2016. As a result, the number of public sites nationwide providing free broadband access will be reduced to 150,000 by 2018 compared to the initial target of 250,000.
