Mexican regulator fines Telmex MXN 49.3 million

Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has fined Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) MXN 49.3 million for monopolistic behaviour at the end of an investigation launched in May 2011. In its ruling, the regulator established that Telmex acted with the goal of setting obstacles to the operations of rival Axtel in the long distance market. Among other things, Telmex ignored requests from Axtel to interconnect with its network, did not provide information to Axtel about its infrastructure, and introduced recorded messages on long-distance calls originating on Axtel's network and terminating
