Mexico's telecommunications sector posted a 5.3 percent year-on-year increase in revenues to MXN 513 billion in the first quarter of 2017, nearly double the country's overall GDP growth rate of 2.8 percent, according to a report from communications regulator IFT. A total of 258,000 people are employed in the sector, with the percentage of women having grown from 28.7 percent in March 2016 to 33.9 percent at the end of the Q1 2017.

The watchdog added that telecommunications prices had fallen 5.7 percent year on year, led by an 11.7 percent decline in the price of mobile telephony. The figures reflect recent comments by America Movil CEO Daniel Hajj Aboumrad who claimed in April that mobile prices in Mexico were some of the cheapest in the world following a year-long price war.
