Mobile industry generates 5.7% of Sub-Saharan African GDP

The mobile industry in Sub-Saharan Africa contributed USD 102 billion to the region's economy last year, according to a new GSMA study, equivalent to 5.7 percent of the region's 2014 GDP. Mobile operators directly contributed USD 31 billion, representing 1.7 percent of GDP. The industry is forecast to contribute USD 166 billion to the region by 2020, equivalent to 8 percent of expected GDP. The study, titled "Mobile Economy -- Sub-Saharan Africa 2015', forecast that there will be 386 million unique mobile subscribers in Sub-Saharan Africa by the end of 2015.
