Mobile money accounts pass 1.2 billion worldwide - GSMA

The number of registered mobile money accounts grew by 13 percent worldwide in 2020 to over 1.2 billion, according the latest report from GSMA. The report attributed the acceleration, which doubled growth expectations, to the covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown restrictions which limited access to cash and financial institutions. The fastest growth was observed in markets where governments provided significant pandemic relief to their citizens. In the year, more than USD 1 billion per month was sent and received via mobile money in the form of remittances globally, every month, via mobile
