Moldova's pay-TV subs up 20% to 324,000 in 2017

Moldova's number of subscribers to pay-TV services increased by about 53,700 or 19.9 percent to 323,700 in 2017 mainly to a large increase of local operators' IPTV subscriber base. Pay-TV sales increased by MDL 7.7 million or 5.1 percent to MDL 159.5 million driven by the increase in the sales of IPTV providers.

IPTV subscribers increased by 61,400 or 78.5 percent compared to 2016 to 139,500. At the same time, the number of cable TV users decreased by 7,600 or 4 percent to 184,000. As a result, the penetration rate of pay TV services per 100 inhabitants of the republic increased by 1.5 percent to 9.1 percent.

According to the data presented by Anrceti, 56.9 percent of the total number of pay-TV subscribers used cable TV networks and 43.1 percent used IPTV networks. Also, 56.5 percent of subscribers received TV signal in the digital format and 43.5 percent in the analog format.

The turnover of IPTV suppliers increased by MDL 10.179 million or 16 percent compared to 2016 to MDL 73.9 million. At the same time, the income of cable TV service providers dropped by MDL 2.4 million or 2.8 percent to MDL 85.6 million. ARPU for pay TV services decreased by 3.5 percent to MDL 44.8.

In terms of turnover, Moldtelecom remains market leader with 32.9 percent, followed by Sun Communications with 23.5 percent and TV Box with 13.1 percent. The cumulative market share of the other 116 suppliers was 30.5 percent.
