More than half of German firms fall victim to digital spying

Some 51 percent of all German companies have been victim of digital industrial espionage over the last two years, according to a study of 1,074 companies by IT association Bitkom. The most heavily affected sector is the automotive industry with 68 percent of companies hit, followed by the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industry with 66 percent, before banks and insurers at 60 percent. According to conservative calculations by Bitkom, the financial harm to the entire German economy amounts to EUR 51 billion per year.
