The total number of registered country code Top Level Domain Names for Nigeria has hit over 30 000, and the cost of purchasing a domain name has fallen from NGN 500,000 to NGN 15,000 to encourage proliferation of the .ng domain names, The National Mirror reported. According to the COO of the Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NiRA), Ope Odusan,  within one week of reducing the cost, NiRA recorded an additional 300 domain names, but he lamented that most of the companies that purchased them were foreign ones.

Odusan said the total number of registered .ng domain names stood at around 9,000 at the end of 2011 and has since increased by 21,000. He said the figure should have been higher, if Nigerian businesses and individuals had taken it seriously. Odusan said foreigners constitute the largest owners of the .ng domain names. He said this is contrary to the perception of many Nigerians, who say that the image problem of Nigeria predisposes foreign companies from wanting to trade with any Nigerian business with the .ng domain name.
