MTG says ESL lifts unique users 90% in first 7 months, hours viewed up 190%, video views up 55%

Wednesday 14 August 2019 | 12:53 CET | News

Modern Times Group (MTG) said its portfolio company ESL has achieved a 90 percent growth in its audience for major e-sports tournaments in the first seven months of 2019, measured by unique users. Hours watched rose by 190 percent and video views climbed by 55 percent as viewers watched tournaments such as ESL One, Intel Extreme Masters and ESL Pro League.

Those figures exclude visitors at the event venues.

ESL said the Intel Extreme Masters event in Katowice in March set the record as the most watched ESL tournament series of all time, with more than 174,000 spectators over two weekends.

ESL One Birmingham in the UK in May reached a new peak of 306,070 concurrent viewers tuning into the broadcast, up by 12.4 percent since the ESL One Dota 2 tournament at the Hamburg Major in 2017. Hours watched exceeded 7.6 million over one weekend.

ESL One Cologne, known as "The Cathedral of Counter-Strike", sold out four years in a row, and recorded 12.3 million hours watched.

The Intel Extreme Masters Sydney in May attracted 20 million viewers. Counter-Strike fans across the world watched almost 10 million hours of content over the course of the event, up 16 percent since 2018.

ESL Pro League Occitanie in June doubled video views to 66.6 million over the previous season and reached more than 16.1 million hours watched.
