MTN launches Sky unlimited plans in South Africa

MTN South Africa will launch its MTN Sky service plans on 01 April, offering subscribers unlimited calls, data and SMS from ZAR 1,699 per month. The new MTN Sky packages also include priority call centre support, free smartphone repairs and access to local and international airport lounges. The company said that the unlimited data comes with a 5GB fair use limit, meaning a subscriber's internet access will be slowed once he has reached the maximum usage of 5GB per month. The average ARPU achieved by MTN South Africa has been facing fluctuations with slight declines at around ZAR 147 since 2006. In my opinion, introducing a package that is 10 times more that the actual ARPU will not be achieving results, even if it targets the upper segment of customers, despite the high QoS of broadband and customer care, given the fierce competition in the market in South Africa. I believe that if MTN South Africa considered including free international roaming "within the limit" instead of airports' free lounges access, such an inclusion could reflect a more reliable offer to attract more subscribers and increase ARPU Ossama Samuel Khaled Muhsin SHARAFALDINE
