MTN South Africa shuts down 53 base stations permanently after vandalism

MTN South Africa says severe damage and vandalism of mobile tower has resulted in 53 base stations shutting down permanently. MTN has recovered batteries worth almost ZAR 1 million in the past week alone, thanks to the involvement of the SAPS, security personal and members of the public. MTN said this is a step in the right direction but the increasing pressure on mobile networks may soon have a serious knock-on effect on the economy.
