Musical.ly fined USD 5.7 mln for violating data laws for children

Thursday 28 February 2019 | 13:34 CET | News
Video social networking app Musical.ly, now known as TikTok, has agreed to pay USD 5.7  million to settle allegations by the US Federal Trade Commission that the company illegally collected personal data from children. The FTC said this was the largest civil penalty even obtained in a children's privacy case. The FTC accused Musical.ly of violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) which says websites and online services must first obtain parental consent before collecting the personal information of children under the age of 13.
