New Italian online copyright regulation enters into force

The new set of regulations governing online copyright in Italy entered into force on 31 March 2014 after receiving the go-ahead from the European Commission. However, some of the most controversial measures of the new legislation have already prompted complaints from trade and consumer associations. One of the cornerstones of the new text is the requirement for copyright holders themselves to initiate proceedings by submitting a complaint to Italy's communications regulator AgCom, which has been given extensive powers to close down sites if illegal content is not taken down.
