New submarine cables linking Madeira and Azores to Portugal could cost EUR 119 million

Wednesday 15 January 2020 | 13:10 CET | News

Maintaining telecom links between mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions of Madeira and Azores could cost EUR 119 million in new submarine cables, according to a working group set up by the Portuguese government in May 2019. The group considered the replacement of the infrastructure that ensures the communications of the CAM ring (submarine cable circuit linking mainland Portugal, Azores and Madeira), reports Jornal Economico.

It recommended that the government presents the project to replace the submarine cables as a "priority" and seek funding from EU funds. There are eleven other scheduled recommendations for the new cables to ensure telecommunications in the CAM ring as early as 2023. The current submarine cables are expected to reach the end of their useful life in 2024-2025.
