New video codec H.266/VVC completed, offering 50% reduction in bandwidth

Fraunhofer HHI is celebrating the release and official adoption of the new global video coding standard H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC) together with partners from industry including Apple, Ericsson, Intel, Huawei, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Sony. The prototypes of the video coding were tested at the end of 2019 in cooperation with the public service broadcaster WDR. The first products based on the new standard are expected to launch commercially in 2021.
