NigComSat says talks with China on satellite procurement on course

Monday 2 December 2019 | 11:11 CET | News

The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSat) has denied recent reports claiming that the agency had suspended its loan talks with China over the procurement of a new satellite, reports Africa News Space. Samson Osagie, executive director for business development, said the loan valued at USD 150 million was meant to pay for a back-up satellite to strengthen the operations of NigComSat satellites.

Recent media reports claimed that the suspension might be due to the failure of the parties to reach a consensus before the dissolution of the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The FEC had been given the mandate to consider the project with former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, by Nigerian President Mohammadu Buhari.

Osagie has now publicly stated that discussions on the new satellites are still going on with a number of satellite manufacturers, including China.
