Ofcom consults on iPlayer competition assessment conclusions

Wednesday 12 June 2019 | 17:25 CET | News

UK regulator Ofcom has announced that the BBC can proceed with planned changes to iPlayer after conducting a Competition Assessment on the plans.

The BBC wants to change iPlayer from a 30-day catch-up service to one where programmes are available for for 12 months as standard, and some for longer. Ofcom has provisionally concluded that the public value of the plans justifies any impact on fair and effective competition. It believes that the changes would increase choice and availability of public service broadcast (PSB) content and help the BBC stay relevant as viewing habits continue to evolve.

The BBC can move forward with its plans, subject to certain conditions that it delivers future public value. Interested parties can submit their views on Ofcom's provisional conclusions until 10 July, with the regulator aiming to publish its final conclusions by August.
