Ofcom could get new powers to fine mobile networks

The UK Government has proposed giving regulator Ofcom the power to impose financial penalties on mobile operators who fail to boost network coverage to end mobile blackspots, reports The Telegraph. The proposal, buried in the Digital Economy Bill, will punish network operators if they fail to meet their pledge to provide signal to 90 percent of the UK by end-2017. It is now being considered by MPs. Digital and culture minister Matt Hancock told The Telegraph that mobile signal had become a vital part of modern life.
