Ofcom greenlights use of TV white spaces

UK communications regulator Ofcom has announced the next stage of its plans to use TV white space (TVWS), following a series of industry trials in the Orkney Islands (internet access), London Zoo (video streaming), Oxfordshire (flood defence data) and University of Strathclyde (Wi-Fi-like services). 'White spaces' are gaps in the radio spectrum in frequency bands, which can be used to offer new wireless applications to benefit consumers and businesses. A key part of the work has involved databases communicating with devices identifying the location, frequencies and times where white space
