One in four Italian families don't pay TV licence

Around 7 million Italian families evade paying the country's TV licence, according to a document filed by the Ministry of Economy during the Italian senate's review of the 2016 budget bill. "Currently [the licence] is paid by about 16 million taxpayers and the number of Italian families, according to Istat data, amounts to about 23 million," said the document. The widespread evasion results in a potential EUR 600 million a year in lost funding for public broadcaster Rai.
