Operator messaging revenue to drop 20% by 2017

Tuesday 14 January 2014 | 09:39 CET | News
Global expenditure on operator messaging services (SMS and MMS) declined for the first time in 2013 following its peak in 2012. Operator revenue from messaging services fell by nearly 4 percent in 2013 to nearly USD 104 billion, according to a report from Strategy Analytics. Continued intense competition for subscribers between operators, combined with the fast growing popularity of over-the-top instant messaging services like WhatsApp, Line Messenger and Tencent's WeChat, are expected to generate a 20 percent decline in global operator messaging revenue by 2017.
