Optoscribe and Sumitomo Electric deploy first multi-core fibre testbed in L'Aquila

Optoscribe, a UK-based supplier of 3D glass-based integrated photonics components, has teamed up with Japan's cable maker Sumitomo Electric Industries and the University of L'Aquila in Italy to deploy the world's first multi-core fibre (MCF) testbed for space-division multiplexed (SDM) communications in a real-field environment. The initiative is part of an experimental research project to help strengthen the telecommunications infrastructure of the city of L'Aquila following a major earthquake which struck the city in 2009, destroying much of the city centre.
