Optus cuts smartphone subsidies

Australian communications provider Optus has cut subsidies offered to new customers of iPhone and Samsung Galaxy smartphones, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. Optus and other operators in Australia have been pushing up the price for popular devices to boost profitability, according to Goldman Sachs research analyst Raymond Tong. He said Optus had cut handset subsidies across its postpaid mobile plans and raised handset prices in the past week. New Optus customers on a AUD 50-a-month plan must pay AUD 696 over the life of the contract to buy a 32GB Apple iPhone, meaning Optus contributes
