Orange plays down functional separation as 'last resort'

France Telecom-Orange CEO Stephane Richard has welcomed the general tone of the Competition Authority's recent decision, especially its support for reducing ex-ante regulation in densely populated areas and its praise for France Telecom's efforts to increase DSL capacity in the regions in tandem with local authorities as an interim stop towards generalised fibre access. Richard replied "In cauda venenum" (the sting is in the tail) when questioned by Les Echos about the antitrust authority's pronouncement on a potential functional separation of France Telecom's network and its Orange services.
