Over 1,700 Italian start-ups set up in 2013 - survey

A total of 1,719 start-ups were set up in Italy in 2013, according to the first report on the country's innovative start-up ecosystem issued by the ministry for economic development (MiSE). Almost a third of the start-ups (30 percent) were registered in northwest Italy, followed by 28 percent in the northeast, 23 percent in central Italy and 19 percent in the south and the islands. In terms of regions, Lombardy (341 start-ups), Emilia-Romagna (192) and Lazio (177) were the regions with the highest number of companies, with Calabria (20), Molise (10) and Basilicata (9) registering the fewest.
