Paraguay may use hydroelectric infrastructure for fibre

Paraguay's telecom regulator Conatel has teamed up with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to examine the possibility of tapping into the fibre network used by the Itaipu and Yacyreta hydroelectric plants with a view to lowering the cost of internet access, reports local daily ABC. Although landlocked Paraguay launched its first internet exchange point (IXP) earlier this month, it still relies on the networks of Argentina and Brazil to reach the sea. As a result, the regulator and the IDB are analysing the potential use of hydroelectric infrastructure to connect with submarine cables,
