Peru regulates leasing of underused spectrum to third parties

Thursday 13 June 2019 | 11:29 CET | News
Peru's transport and communications ministry (MTC) has published a supreme decree with new regulations designed to ensure that all smartphones entering the country have the ability to receive alerts of possible earthquakes, tsunamis and landslides from the country’s early warning system (Sismate). All mobile devices sold in Peru must be able to receive Sismate’s messages from 24 July, said MTC. Chilean telecom regulator Subtel introduced a similar measure back in 2017.

The new regulations also state that the TAC number (first 8 digits of the IMEI) of imported phones must match those included on the global GSMA database with a view to reducing national and international device crime.
