Peru watchdog blocked over 1.7 mln phones with invalid IMEI last year

Peruvian telecom services regulator Osiptel said it blocked a total of 1.77 million mobile phones reported as stolen or with no registered user in 2020 as a whole. The watchdog was forced to temporarily suspend the process to block handsets with invalid international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) numbers from March to July due to the Covid-19 pandemic but it still managed to invalidate 200,000 phones in September, 300,000 in October, 290,000 in November and 140,000 in December.
