Peru's Osiptel orders operators to block 1 million more phones

Monday 17 September 2018 | 11:30 CET | News
Peruvian telecom services regulator Osiptel has ordered the country's operators to block around 1 million phones with invalid international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) numbers. The watchdog said operators will be given until 19 September to block the handsets, all of which are included on the country's 'Renteseg' register set up last year to prevent illegal trade in wireless equipment. Operators are required to send text messages to anyone using the devices warning them that phones will be blocked in 48 hours and the service suspended until the equipment is handed in.
