Police says Tele2 Sweden must resume data retention

The Swedish national police directorate has asked post and telecoms regulator PTS to order Tele2 to go back to storing traffic data, in line with the law on electronic communications. On 14 April, Tele2 said it had stopped storing customer data, after the European Court of Justice declared the EU Data Protection Directive invalid. Tele2 also said it would start erasing customer information that it had already saved. Chief legal council Stefan Backman said the operator welcomed the formal judicial test of its legal assessment. He said it was important for PTS to give guidance.
